Cave in Flores, Indonesia.
Liang Bua is the limestone cave where hominin remains christened Homo floresiensis, (the Hobbit) were found. In 2004 researcher Mike Moorwood and his team published their find of a "population of tiny hominins, sufficiently distinct anatomically to be assigned to a new species" in Nature.

Homo Erectus colonized Flores 55,000-35,000 years ago. The 3 foot tall adult remains found in Liang Bua Cave and a sophisticated stone tool kit date from 12,000 years to 95,000 years ago, with human remains of normal, modern stature also found in the cave dating from 12000 to 11000 years ago.

Ever since the discovery, the remains (portions of eight individuals, but only one complete skull) have been the subject of intense examination. Some researchers have reported orthopedic similarities of the remains to early man and to chimpanzee, supporting that the find represents a distinct species. Others have argued against the remains being a separate human species and present evidence that the individuals' remains represent anatomical pathology.

The Megalithic Portal has reported on these finds in 2007 and 2010, and continues to track news stories in a "Stones" Forum thread.

Note - the location given is only roughly accurate. Several websites describe the cave as being accessible from Ruteng by bus or track. More than one tour company runs multi-day excursions from Bali to Flores Island (with visits to the cave).

Note: Prospects of recovering ancient DNA from Homo floresiensis boosted by study on teeth. Open this site listing for the link to new comments in the "Stones" Forum.
