Tesperhude Totenhaus submitted by holger_rix : Totenhaus Tesperhude In front the second, bathtube like tomb. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Just outside the village Tesperhude, near the river Elbe, a small muddy pathway leads to some of the the most unusual tombs that i have seen. In fact, there is nothing to compare in northern Germany.

First of, the 'House of the Dead', the 'Totenhaus' that gave this place the groussom name. It is apprx. 3200 years old. A woman and her 2 year old child have been burried here. Obviously they had build a house arround the two, standing on 12 wooden poles. The place was covered with stones, size 7 by 7 metres. This house has been burned down, and now just the stones are left.

The second tomb is a big bathtube like construction of stones, and the third has the shape of a horseshoe.

Besides these three there is a small tumulus, and a pretty big one a little aside.

There are several examples known of this type in this area:
Eitzen (Kreis Uelzen), Mechtersen (Kreis Lüneburg), Schutschur (Kreis Lüchow-Dannenberg), Gödenstorf, Sottorf (both Kreis Harburg), Hamburg-Marmstorf.

Wooden constructions (other types) were found at many other barrow cemeterys in Germany too.
