The Gräberfelder von Putensen are two adjacent cemeteries in Salzhausen-Putensen (Lower Saxony/Germany).
The first one is an urn cemetery that was founded in the Pre-Roman Iron Age and was used from 450 BC to 50 AD. The excavations (1938-1939/1961-1963) lead to the discovery of 743 urn graves of the Jastorf culture.
The grave goods included belt hooks, needles, earrings as well as a large range of different ceramics and stone rings. The remains of a wall built of boulders was preserved on the Eastern side of the cemetery.
The second cemetery was used from 50-375 AD by the Lombards. The cremated remains were buried without urns. They either were put directly into the ground or they had been put into cloth bags that are not preserved. The excavations (1938-1939/1956/1961) lead to the discovery of 982 graves.
Several important grave goods were found, which includes a significant number of weapons (axes, lances, spearheads, shields, swords). Furthermore, a rich ceramic repertoire, much equipment (shears, files, knives, razors), some jewelry (finger and arm rings) and especially costume components (fibulae, belt hooks, needles and buckles) were found.
It is interesting to note that seven cremated remains were buried in Roman bronze vessels. Among the outstanding burials is the warrior burial in grave 150. This and some of the other finds can be seen in the Archäologisches Musuem Hamburg.
