Barrow Cemetery in Buskerud
The name Frøyshov comes from the name of the Norse god Frøy and the word "hov" means ancient place of worship.
This barrow consists of around 24 round barrows probably from the roman iron age. The barrow cemetery is first noted in written journals arond 1743.
The barrows range in size from 5 to 18 metres in diameter and from 0,5 to 2 metres in height. Several of the barrows have a ring of stones around its edges. The ring of stones are preserved in half of the barrows. The barrow next to the largest barrow has the best preserved ring of stones. Stones on tops of some of the barrows can be from pieces of standing stones once located on top of the barrows. Some of the barrows have pits or craters dug into them on the top.
These kind of barrows are typical from the older iron age. They are locally called warrior tombs and there are over 100 of them known trough the area. The barrows are often located next to a settlement. They mostly consists of burned bones put inside a clay jar or urn.
The barrows are located on top of a hill and they are all covered in high grass. It can be difficult to distinguish the details of every barrow.
