TheCaptain couldn't find on 6th Aug 2005 I spent ages looking for this. I can only assume it is somewhere in the very dense fenced off woodland, in amongst the open fields. I am getting fed up of all this again.

Captain, how is it called on IGN maps ? Two (seemingly) independent 'panoramio' contributors (mYr and Crampour) call it : "La pierre Levée [de] Graudeville". Is it an alternative name ? There are many many 'Pierres levées'...

on the ign maps, this dolmen is referred to as "Dolmen des Grès de Linas". To see the ign maps of the site, click on the geoportail icon, the blue aeroplane button, 2nd from right at the top of the page, then select the maps box from the top left. This then lets you zoom in to see all scales. I can add the other name as an alternate.

All right, I put " Le Loup de Thionville" as alternative name. "Pierres levées" are so numerous, such names do not help.

You can use the GPS coordinate. I recommend also to use this website :

        http://atlas.patrimoines.culture.fr/atlas/trunk/
The French archeological map where you can choose your own format of map (IGN or others)

No harm in listing Dolmen La pierre Leveé as Alt Name as well - anything that helps people find it... Thanks

As a matter of interest : the words "Pierre levée" (French) translates word for word (in English) as "Raised Stone". It is an ancient generic name, but still in use, covering anything from menhir to dolmen to even cromlech (stone circle). These latter words, originating in Britanny, took hold at the end of the 19th century, mainly in French.
In today's parlance, "Pierre levée" would be equivalent to "Megalith" -- but in a sleepy village in the middle of the countryside ("dans la France profonde"), better avoid the neologism, unless you do not mind being taken for a "Parisian".

With the help of the ign website geoportail.fr I can now see the whole of France on 1:25,000 scale maps, and can pinpoint the dolmen more accurately. Its in the field to the east of the northern wood. I must have walked almost right past it. I guess the dolmen was hidden by crops.

Having said that, it's clearly visible on the aerial photo. just into the next field over. If only that website was available last year.

Doh. Another so near yet so far.

I spent ages looking for this to no avail. I can only assume it is somewhere in the very dense fenced off woodland, in amongst the open fields.
