St. Ethelburga's Well
St. Ethelburga's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : Just about visible through the brambles is the gleam of water. There is actually quite a deep pit - caution is advised before closer investigation. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Kent

This well is often noted as being at Herne, but is in fact close to the old Ford Ecclesiastical Palace. The Palace site is now occupied by Ford Manor Farm, and the well may be found by taking the footpath opposite the farm.

I visited in May 2005, and, passing through a gate, the well is far from obvious, and I could not identify it until directed by a local resident. It is very overgrown, with a clump of brambles around a central tree, the whole surrounded by a derelict fence. Close investigation showed water in the depths – my informant told me that thirty years ago this was plainly visible.

St. Ethelburga's Well (Lyminge)
St. Ethelburga's Well (Lyminge) submitted by DavidCWoods : The housing is marked 1898 and is a strange contraption. It contains a pump, but on examining the back of the housing from the playing field behind, it was found to be the top of a tower rising from the source of a small stream. St. Ethelburga's Well (Lyminge) submitted by DavidCWoods : The base of the tower had an unglazed window covered with a grill, through which a pool could be seen. Stepping stones at the bottom of a path gave a way across the stream. The well is sited at the base of the hill on which the church is built. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St. Ethelburga's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : As with so many wells, a footpath runs close by. One wonders whether these are ancient rights of way to allow the populus to visit. (Vote or comment on this photo)
