Appledore Round Barrow
Appledore Round Barrow submitted by PBallard : Appledore round barrow from the north, looking out over Romney Marsh towards Rye. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow in Kent. A round barrow situated just north of Appledore village. This barrow sits on the top of a hill on the edge of the saxon shoreline. It would have been prominently visible from the sea to anyone entering the area that is now Romney Marsh.

The barrow is in reasonably good nick, but it does have several trees growing out of it with rope swings attached, and well worn trackways over its surface are testament to its use by local kids as a playground. There is also a small bench on the top.

The barrow is still very prominent in the landscape however, and has a circular depression on the top. Whether this is a collapsed central chamber, or something more prosaic, like the site of an uprooted tree, or a collapsed badger set is unknown.

Re: Appledore Round Barrow or mill mound? by Anonymous on Tuesday, 27 December 2022
To clarify, the round barrow is at approx grid 960306 and not as indicated on the interactive OS Map. That map shows thd Mill Mound as being the barrow when they are two different places.

Re: Appledore Round Barrow or mill mound? by Anonymous on Tuesday, 23 March 2021
I wanted to find out more about this barrow, but it is recorded as a redundant mill mound by the Heritage Gateway/Kent HER. Is there any more information to suggest it is a barrow, or is that supposition?
