Ancient Mine, Quarry or other Industry in Kent

Fort Amherst is a Napoleonic Fort in Chatham, Kent.
Most of it consists of underground tunnels. There is a large shaft that reaches the surface and is thought to be the remains of a Dene hole dug by prehistoric people to extract flint.

There are numerous Dene Holes around the Medway area. There true age is not known.

There are many tunnels running under the Chatham area, some have been found during construction and road works. These are thought to be connected to the various forts built in the area.

Chatham Dockyard is just up the road from Fort Amherst.

And the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham is near by.
