This site is more a rock-shelter than a cave, by a cliff looking facing South-East. It was the best possible direction for this périod of SOLUTREEN, 19000 or 18000 years BP at the end of Wurm Glaciation and it was the southern limits of the glaciers.
THIS SITE CAN BE VISITED ONLY WITH A PHONE CALL OR ON A HISTORIC MONUMENT OPEN-DAY.
HOMO SAPIENS SAPIENS lived alongside this cliff maybe under animals skins shelters.
This place was studied by "Docteur Léon HENRI-MARTIN" between 1924 and 1927 (see "La QUINA" site). He had discovered there some famous engraved limestone blocks collapsed on the bottom of the cliff with lithic matérials: flint arrows, harpoon points and especially a basic tomb with three skeletons of "CHANCELADE TYPE".
The Professor said in his notes, he found a quartz crystal who have been imported and used for sculpt the limestone.
The engraved blocks are exposed on St GERMAIN EN LAYE muséum.
We find on them: bovines, horses, bear, and a bison with a boar head.
One of the bisons attack a human individual bringer of a javelin. Horses have the back legs broken.
It is a rare site because of the human représentation.
"The size of the animals correspond to the medium dog size" said the Professor.
Some discoveries come from MAGDALENIAN périod.
I visit this site two months ago during an archéological exposition and it is possible to see copies of the engraved blocks on the site. Maybe in the future some further activities can be offered.
Note: Pictures of the animal carvings from this ancient cliff shelter, only occasionally open to the public, sent in by Taupin
