Heritage Eastbourne's museums care for collections including internationally important artefacts such as prehistoric elephant's teeth, Bronze Age axes and much more. The Redoubt Fortress is one of only three surviving Napoleonic Redoubts in the UK.

Find over 200 years of history at the Redoubt Fortress, built during the Napoleonic wars, this unique fortification was also used during World Wars I and II and tells a fascinating story of military campaigns all over the world.

Living on the Edge 8000 years by the sea
until 12th November 2017

Eastbourne Pavilion

Discover the stories of life along the Seven Sisters over the past 8000 years. From Stone Age settlers and Roman farms to Victorian coastguards guarding the coast. For some, this was their first glimpse of Britain. For others leaving this coast as soldiers, it would be their last memory of home. Find out how the National Trust’s Seven Sisters Archaeology Project with its team of volunteers have preserved these stories for the future.

Living on the Edge: 8,000 Years by the Sea - A Guided Tour

The Pavilion, 71 Royal Parade, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN22 7AQ

Explore the free ‘Living on the Edge’ exhibition by Heritage Eastbourne and the National Trust at The Pavilion in an exclusive tour at 12.30pm, and discover pre-historic artefacts, a sunken U-boat and over 8,000 years of fascinating history based around the South Downs and it's changing landscape.

The notorious Battle of Beachy Head is revealed from the Nine Year’s War in 1690 with recovered ammunition on show, while the exhibition travels further back to Stone Age times with the chance to discover how flint tools are made and see a Mesolithic pick and flint sickle on display.

Budding scientists can even get to grips with dating methods themselves by examining molluscs under a microscope, just one of the interactive activities on offer.

The exhibition is the result of excavations, interviews and painstaking research over the last few years at sites along the Seven Sisters coastline and will be available as an exclusive tour with one of the Heritage Eastbourne’s experts for this year's Heritage Open Days Event.

    Opening Times
    Saturday 9 September: 1000-1700, Tour 1230

    No booking required

Max 15 people per tour/session. Exhibition open daily 1000-1700, Heritage Open Days tour available on Saturday 9th September.
    Directions

The Pavilion is on Eastbourne’s seafront and consists of a quaint tearoom/cafe and a medium sized exhibition space. It is located next to the Redoubt Fortress and currently home to the new free exhibition 'Living by the Edge: 8,000 Years by the Sea'.
