Re: Winn's Common Tumulus by Anonymous on Sunday, 15 August 2021
Between 1947 and 1951 I lived in a pre fab in Commonweath Way, Abbey Wood and just down the road in Federation Road was a chalk cave. We used to explore but being only young not too far. The land was owned by the Coop and is now a camp site and no doubt the cave is sealed.
I went to school in Purret Road, Plumstead, just down from Winns Common but what my query is could the chalk caves at Abbey Wood been dug in ancient times and does any one know if the cave off Stream Dale , Wickhame Lane ,named Turpins Cave on the opposite side of Bostall Woods to the cave at Frederick Road are connected?
Being an old man of eighty, with only memories, I would be interested.

The common itself or the Tumulus? If the later, I suggest you contact the members who've submitted these photos.

The mound is not marked on the current ordnance survey maps.

From Greenwich Council website:
The burial mound is on the eastern part of Plumstead Common, known as Winn’s Common, near Bleak Hill Lane. The mound is about 20 metres in diameter and very worn down. It is thought that it may have been part of a cluster of seven tumuli similar to the cluster known to have existed on Shooter’s Hill. The Winn’s Common tumulus has been opened some time in the past but there is no record of what was found or who was involved. The dimensions and shape of the two survivors suggest that they may be Bronze Age burial mounds.

The barrow on Winns Common and the one in Brinklow Crescent on Shooters Hill Shrewsbury Tumulus are the only survivors. Five were destroyed in the 1930's when the Laing Estate was built on Shooters Hill. One that stood in Shrewsbury Park survived the destruction by Laing but has subsequently vanished.

Sitting on the edge of a rugby pitch, and used by dogwalkers daily, this typical eroded round barrow is totally ignored and overlooked.
