The Culver Archaeological Project (CAP) was set up in 2006 and is currently investigating a previously unknown Romano British settlement site located in the bend of the River Ouse at Bridge Farm, Upper Wellingham, East Sussex

The project began with a simple programme of field-walking, survey and trial trenching in the hope of identifying further archaeological sites within the landscape around Barcombe Roman Villa. Little did they know back then that they would not only find an unknown Roman road but a sizable undiscovered Romano-British settlement, both of which would lead to large area excavations.

Prehistoric discoveries include a Bronze Age cremation and a Middle Bronze Age steak point found, remarkably in a 1m square test pit, in a water-logged area which could well hide other organic artefacts from this period. Recent seasons have seen our summer campaign move east of the River Ouse to investigate a large unrecorded Romano-British riverside settlement, founded in the late 1st century, enclosed in the late 2nd and still an area of activity through the 3rd and 4th centuries. Whilst our previous objectives and locations are not being neglected it has been decided that priority must be given to this discovery of regional importance.

Iron Age finds at Bridge Farm by Andy B on Tuesday, 28 June 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
David Millum writes: During May CAP officers have been undertaking an archaeological evaluation prior to a planning application to extend the buildings around the yard at Bridge Farm. This comprised 4 machine dug evaluation trenches along the south and east sides of the concrete yard. Along the outside edge of trench 2 was a small patch of burning at about 400mm below the surface. When excavated a small pit emerged with an area of burnt clay surrounded by 5 holes which whilst temptingly like stake holes are now thought more likely to be merely the results of bioturbation from plant roots.

A 1m by 400mm extension was dug to expose the whole feature and the burnt clay area carefully revealed. This rendered 5 sherds of pottery which appeared in their unwashed state to be the normal RB course wares. But with due diligence these were posted first class to Malcolm Lyne and his analysis came as a pleasant surprise for he identified 4 of the 5 as Late Iron Age and the fifth as local East Sussex ware. He suggested that if the sherds could be considered as an assemblage then they were most likely deposited during the first century BC i.e. Late Iron Age.pot sherds

Whilst a couple of IA coins have been detected on the site this is the first time that IA pottery has been excavated from an archaeological feature on Bridge Farm and potentially extends the activity period on the site considerably. Are all those field boundaries Romano-British or are some a lot older?

The trenches have now been back-filled and a full report sent to the County Archaeologist department. Whilst Bridge Farm just gets better and better!
