Tumulus du Montiou
Tumulus du Montiou submitted by Rubis : Entrances of first and second chambers! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Discovered only in the 19th century, this tumulus had been used as a stone quarry up until the 1920's. Between 1975 and 1981 excavations were carried out, which allowed identification as a middle neolithic age site, being started between 4600BC to 3500BC, with continual use up to the iron age, around 1100BC.

Remains of three tumuli are still to be found, known as A, B and C.

Tumulus A, of which the most remains to be seen, is f quadrangular shape, width about 24m. The tumulus contains 4 dolmenic chambers, which open through passageways to the south.

The second and third cairns lie to the south west of the first, but much less remains to be seen of them today.

Many items were found here, much of which can be seen today in the museum at Bougon.

Tumulus du Montiou
Tumulus du Montiou submitted by oldman : Site in Poitou:Deux-Sèvres (79) France. This site does seem to be reasonably restored and provides good access to those who wish to enter the chambers. I've added a few pictures showing the huge stones lining the passages and chambers.
