Ancient Town in Cherokee County. The site was founded by the Hasinai Caddo around 800AD - 1300AD. There are three visible mounds, two platform mounds and a burial mound. The site also includes a portion of the the adjacent village. The size and population of the Caddo Mounds town reached its peak around 1100 AD, as part of the larger Mississippian Culture of the southeastern United States. Two of the mounds date from this time period, and the other reached its peak size in this period.

The location given is for the museum and visitor center. Caddo Mounds is a Texas State Historical site.

The Caddo culture is identified from 800 AD, into the contact period, and on to the modern Caddo Nation, their government being headquartered in Binger, Oklahoma. The mound building activities of the culture date from the 800's to the 1300's.

New video from the site provided by Gregory L. Little, Ed.D.:

https://twitter.com/i/status/1684547361878556673

Description: "The Ka-Do-Ha (Caddo) mound site in Arkansas where several mounds have excavation burial remains (replicas) found in the shafts on display. Everything at the bottom is a replica. This shows how excavation pits were made by the Smithsonian and C. B. Moore (and a few others) in the 1800s and early 1900s when they dug into at least 5,000 mounds."

Prehistoric Caddo by Andy B on Friday, 28 December 2018
(User Info | Send a Message)
Prehistoric Caddo culture developed as a regional variant of the Mississippian tradition in southwest Arkansas and in parts of Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas between AD 800 and 1100. The characteristics that archaeologists use to identify this prehistoric culture include pottery containers with new shapes and decorations, flat-topped mounds used as platforms for buildings, conical mounds erected over dismantled buildings that occasionally were used as burial sites, new burial practices, new settlement practices, and new subsistence practices. Parallels between some of these features and European descriptions of the historic Caddo who lived in the same large region in the 1600s and 1700s indicate that the prehistoric Caddo were ancestors of the modern Caddo Nation.
