Natchez Trace
Natchez Trace submitted by bat400 : A portion of the original Trace. When the trail passed through areas of soft soils, or places where the trail itself was easily flooded, the trail is sunken, sometimes for miles. Photo by bat400, October 2011. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient and Historic Trail through Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.
The Natchez Trace was a roughly 450 mile trail between the Mississippi River in what is now Mississippi and the Cumberland River in what is now Tennessee. Although it is best known as a historic trail used by explorers and traders in the 18th and early 19th centuries, that trail was based on a much earlier set of trails used by the early Native American groups who coalesced into the historic Chickasaw and Choctaw peoples.

The trail is marked today by prehistoric sites, many of which are accessible to the public with site interpretation, from the Grand Village of the Natchez at the southern end of the trail, to the Old Town site at the northern end of the trail, near Nashville.
The trail is commemorated by the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail and the Natchez Trace Parkway. Portions of the original trail as well as many historic and prehistoric sites are accessible along the Parkway, a scenic, limited access road with a maximum speed of 50 mph and no commercial traffic.

Many portions of the trace are National Historic Landmarks or on the National Register of Historic Places. The location given is for the southern end of the Natchez Trace Parkway in Natchez, Mississippi.
