Ancient Settlement in Chimaltenango State, Guatemala.
A small Late Classical Mayan city. There are two temples over ninety feet high, four plazas, a ball court. According to Jacque and Parney VanKirk (Remarkable Remains, 1996, University of Oklahoma Press) it is one of the loveliest of the Mayan ruins in Guatemala.

The site is located on a plateau with defensive walls and ditches.
The city was founded in 1470 by people known as the Kaqchikel (Cakchiquel) Mayan. They were subjects of the Quiche, broke away, but continued to be in conflict with them. In order to better fight their former masters, the rulers of Iximche' approached the Spanish as allies in 1524. Although this worked in the short term to vanquish their Quiche enemies, eventually the Spanish destroyed Iximche' as well.

The site is still used for religious ritual by the local Mayan people. More recently it has become a rally point for political statements of Mayan groups protesting political oppression and the negative legacies of Spanish rule.

The location given is approximate.

Note: President Bush visits the site 12 March 2007. Evil Spirits Aroused.

Bush Visit to Iximche' Incites Evil Spirirts, says Mayan by bat400 on Monday, 12 March 2007

Mayan priest to purify sacred site after Bush visit

GUATEMALA CITY — Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization, said Thursday.

On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche.

Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace.

From the "Bush Notebook" at the Houston Chronicle.
