Bonampak
Bonampak submitted by LivingRocks : Mexico: Temple of the Murals - Room 1 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Chiapas State, Mexico. A small Mayan site. The site dates from the early classic period (AD 580 – 800). Whilst not architecturally impressive it is noted for the Temple of the Murals which contains the finest known Mayan murals depicting scenes of court life & battle.

Bonampak may have defeated by the larger nearby city of Yaxchilan in armed conflict or simply came under it's control by other means. But texts indicate that Bonampak's later ruler were from Yaxchilan. Chaan Muan II was the last recorded ruler of Bonampak. He was responsible for the building of the three structures on the Temple of the Murals and caused their incredible decorations to be installed.

Note: Find in crypt beneath Temple of the Murals may be special war captive or Noble burial. See comment

Burial Discovered at Bonampak Building by bat400 on Thursday, 14 January 2010

Submitted by coldrum ---

The search of adequate conservation of Bonampak mural paintings, located in Chiapas, turned out into the discovery of a crypt under the second room of Templo de las Pinturas (Temple of the Paintings) with rests of a man accompanied with jadeite ornaments and ceramic objects that could be more than 1,300 years old.

The unknown character’s rests could correspond to a war captive such as those represented in La Batalla mural, or a relative of Chaan Muan II, who ruled Bonampak from 776 to 792 of the Common Era.

Digital Preservation of Bonampak Murals by bat400 on Friday, 13 April 2007

Like ancient cave paintings, now that the Bonampak murals are open to the elements in a way they've not been over the last centuries, there are several efforts to digitally record the images. This is a link to a Tulane University effort and includes some descriptions of these amazing murals.

The modern discover of the Bonampak murals was a major blow to earlier considerations of the Maya as an entirely peace loving people, as some images display both sacrificial captives and auto-blood sacrifice.
