Platform Mound in Adams County, Mississippi. Emerald Mound is one of the largest earthen mounds in the United States at 770 x 435 feet, 35 feet high. It was built and maintained from approximately 1200 - 1600 AD and the last peoples to use the mound and its associated town were the Natchez Indians encountered by the French in 1682.

By that time the Natchez had abandoned the town around Emerald Mound, Jenzanaqtac, possibly because of social upheaval that followed diseases introduced to the south eastern section of what is now the United States by the de Soto expedition in the 1500's. This settlement appears to have been one of the last active expressions of the large platform mound building culture along the Mississippi River which was seen at this height in the Cahokia Mississippian society.
Emerald Mound has two smaller platforms on its upper terraces, and evidence exists for buildings to have been placed on these platforms. There were once six other major mounds in the immediate area, but these were destroyed over the years by plowing.
Emerald Mound lies to the north east of the modern city of Natchez. It is located off the Natchez Trace Parkway, the 450 mile scenic road that follows the path of the footpath that originated with the first inhabitants of North America and was later used by European settlers and traders. The National Park service maintains the property, which is a National Historic Landmark.
