Stone Fort in Co. Cork

A cashel ringfort, offically recorded as monument CO048-069----

In mountainous moorland, on high shelf looking N along valley. Circular area (diam. 20m) enclosed by ruinous remains of stone wall (H 0.4m) topped by stone field fence. Possible outer wall (H 0.3m) with shallow intervening fosse W->E. Interior raised slightly on N side to compensate for downslope.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).

Cashels are essentially a ringfort where instead of the enclosing element being an earthen construction of bank and ditch, the enclosing element is a stone construction. Often found where topsoil is shallow and stone is abundant they are usually a roughly circular or oval area, though some examples are rectangular, which is surrounded by a stone wall or walls.

They functioned as residences and/or farmsteads and broadly date from 500 to 1000 AD.
