Balamkú submitted by davidmorgan : The ornate jaguar motif. (Vote or comment on this photo)
One of the stucco jaguars on substructure I-A's frieze (in the Central group) gave this archaeological site its name "Jaguar's Temple". Three architectural groups - the South, Central and North, constitute the site core. Its occupation seems to date from 300 BCE, although some ceramics dated between 600 and 300 BCE have been found.

Towards the year 800 CE some structures were built with a very different architectural style. The south group was abandoned probably around 1000 CE; although fragments of incense burners (dated to 1200 - 1500 CE) have been found. The North group has yet to be excavated.

Balamkú submitted by davidmorgan : A wonderful stucco figure on the frieze inside The House Of The Four Kings at Balamkú dating from ~600 CE. Discovered in 1990, the frieze had remained hidden until then because another structure had been built over the top of it.
