Uxmal
Uxmal submitted by davidmorgan : The recently discovered passage under the Governor's Palace. Photo credit: Mauricio Marat, INAH (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient City and Ceremonial Site in Yucatán, Mexico. A Maya city founded ~500 CE with most structures dating from 700 - 1100 CE. The site contains some of the most massive Maya buildings - the Adivino or Pyramid of the Magician, the Governor's Palace, the "Nunnery" Quadrangle and also the Great Pyramid.

Reconstruction in the 20thC was minimal compared to many other sites because the main structures were so well built, with little plaster "filler." Despite the beauty of the site and the massive public buildings, little excavation has been performed at Uxmal, so past population estimates are considered very speculative. The site was occupied at the Conquest, but the population was so small the Spanish did not build in the immediate area to administrate and control.
A UNESCO World Heritage site.

Re: Passageway discovered beneath the Governor's Palace at Uxmal. by Anonymous on Monday, 02 November 2020
Hi!
I must say I am amazed. I am fascinated by the Mayan culture but please, let me get one thing straight. I am by no means an expert or even advanced in the subject. Just an amateur who is absolutely thrilled to learn something new. Having said that. It is my first broader learning about Uxmal and I find it breathtaking. Is this place usually open to the tourists? Is it possible to buy a trip with a guide to see and photograph that place. It looks incredibly interesting and that may be my new life goal. To go and see it.

I dug deeper into Polish Internet and there are indeed descriptions about the Magician's Pyramid or El Castillo. I will keep on reading.

One more thing though (or two). Is it true (as Polish Wiki states) that the material those magnificent building are created with is: calcium? Isn't calcium...soft? As I said I am no scientist, more of a humanist but right now I am more like a child in a candy store just looking at all that and gasping.

Thank you!

Aga

Passageway discovered beneath the Governor's Palace at Uxmal. by davidmorgan on Thursday, 15 October 2020

Although it was found walled, it is 25 metres long, it is Early Puuc style and its age is estimated between the years 670 and 770 CE.

INAH archaeologists who carry out restoration work in the palace, also found a Chaac figurehead and vestiges of three ancient stairways.
