Ancient Village in Petén.
Uaxactun, or Siaan K'aan, in it's original Mayan name, is one of the sites that was inhabited from the early Formative till the collapse during the Terminal Classic.

It can boast to a few "firsts" :

- It was the first site where excavation by Frans Blom revealed that Mayas constructed one building atop of the other, covering but never destructing the older one. This was were the famous E VII sub was revealed, by which is was noted that the group of buildings functioned ad an observatory for the solstices. Since then, all observatories are referred to as E groups

- It was the first recorded city to fall under Tikals expantionist policy under the guidance of the not so very Mayan Fire Is Born, in 378 AD. The combined Tikal/Uaxactun state dominated the Petén Basin until 550 AD.

Guatemala's Tikal National Park includes the ruins of Uaxactun within its protected area. You can get there by public transport, but don't expect frills, it's a right kerfuffle. Basically you better visit Tikal first, then take the bus as it passes up north along a gravel/mud road. Expect to sleep over a night or two. In return, you'll probably be all alone soaking up the aura of the stones.

Picture sets of Group A, Acropolis, Group B and the enigmatic Group E.
