Ancient Village in Clarke County, Alabama.
In the vicinity of Gainstown are the remains of a much older town. It is marked with an earthen, oval mound, and it may be one of the last places where locals repulsed the planned conquest of De Soto.
The Spanish recorded the name of the town as Mauvilla, Maubilla, or Mabilla. Historians have been trying to tie the chronicle with an actual place for over 100 years.
This town near the forks of the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers is now being examined for physical evidence of the first contact and a pitched battle that followed it. Note: The location given is for Gainstown.
Note: Archaeologist follows clues to location of chronicle battle.
