bat400 visited on 4th Aug 2007 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Four visible mounds. They are believed to have been flat topped mounds for building sites, but they have been degraded over the years by plowing that only one is remotely of the classic four sided platform. The other three are rounded off and relatively low.
Placards describe the site briefly.
Likely used as a platform for a major building in this Mississippian Era town site. The mound is more than a 100 feet on a side and approximately 20 feet high. Ca. 1200-1500 AD.
Named in honor of a Smithsonian archaeologist, the Fewkes site was a 15 acre settlement with 4 major mounds around a central plaza and a smaller mound to one side. The post hole remains of circular buildings and smaller rectangular homes surrounded the mounds. The whole site lies along a creek fed by Boiling Springs close by the Little Harpeth River. Differences in burial practices seem to point to successive habitation by two different groups or a change in burial practices over time. Both groups used very shallow stone boxes for flexed (and later) supine burials.
The mound is in a small Brentwood city park which also includes the historic Boiling Springs Academy building. A paved parking area lies close on the vague impressions of the 3 smaller mounds, and a wheelchair accessible sidewalk leads to the large Mound and the school building. Small signs describe the prehistoric and historic sites. Although a sign indicates the park hours from morning until late afternoon, on my visit the parking area was gated. There was room to park off the main road safely at the entrance.
The location given is for Mound 1 of the complex.
