Page Site, Kentucky
Page Site, Kentucky submitted by AKFisher : "Lost City" Kentucky, a mound site with 67 to more than 80 mounds. It is an example of mounds that were unknown when the Smithsonian was trying to documents mounds. It was a tourist site from 1936 to 1941 and the illustration is a 1930's magazine ad. It's all on private property and in 2013 we visited this remote site. It remains enigmatic since only 16 mounds were every investigated. I'm having a... (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Page Site was a huge mound complex with 67 mounds, but today only 30 mounds remain. It was once famously known as "Lost City" and was developed as a tourist site with a museum erected on a large platform mound. In the 1960s the venture failed and the museum was torn down.

Rafinesque probably visited the site in the 1800s while it was still being inhabited by Native Americans. In 1928-29, the site was partially excavated by the University of Kentucky revealing numerous stone box graves; many large, well-constructed stone burial chambers in burial mounds; and huge numbers of cremations and burials.[2] So many skulls and skeletal remains were found that Raymond Vietzen wrote in the 1940s that "wagonloads of bones" were removed and taken from the site.[3]

Page Site, Kentucky
Page Site, Kentucky submitted by AKFisher : "Lost City Mounds" in Kentucky was a tourist site for some years. It had just under 70 mounds, mostly Hopewell burial. In the photo, in the center just above the field, you can see the top of a conical mound. It is on private property, but it's on Lost City Road. Page Site, Kentucky submitted by AKFisher : 1929 survey of Kentucky's "Lost City," AKA the Page Site. I posted earlier about this 67-80-some mound site. The 67 mounds in this survey cover an area about a half mile square. Page Site, Kentucky
Page Site, Kentucky submitted by AKFisher : I've mention Kentucky's "Lost City," also known as the Page Site. It still had 67 mounds in the 1920s and it's thought it originally had 80 or more. In 1928-9 the Univ. of Kentucky's Webb & Funkhouser excavated 18 of them. The contents were unusual in part because of the amount of stone used. Mound 48 was 7 feet high with a base of 40 x 60 feet. Just under a thin layer of external dirt a well-mad... (Vote or comment on this photo)
