Rock Outcrop in Morgan County, Indiana. Blue Bluff is not a particularly showy site, but it has an early historic (and prehistoric) connection. You consider how early people moved over the earth and charted their way when you visit this site. Blue Bluff is an exposed shale and siltstone outcropping above the west fork of White River.

The immediate area around it is heavy wood with a wide variety of native plants (one a rare species.) The plot is owned and protected by the Central Indiana Land Trust.
The bluff is visible for miles along the flood plane of the river. More importantly it's noteworthy as you travel the river - there are few bluffs in the area. It was used by the historic Delaware Indians and European settlers as a meeting place and general guide to the area. (As in "I'll meet you at Blue Bluff two months from now and we'll set up a hunting camp.") It is highly likely that the landmark was known to the prehistoric Mississippian cultures that had their villages in the area. More recently (turn of the last century) there was a tourist camp (complete with cabins, dance pavilion, and dining area) at the foot of the bluff for visitors wishing to fish and boat on the river. The buildings are now completely gone, washed away in floods.

Blue Bluff Road crosses the river just west of the exposed rock outcropping and turns further west and then south around the foot of the forested portion of the bluff. A small green sign is posted on the road opposite what used to be the direct access into the preserve. Public access is not available at this time due to safety concerns.

Delaware Indians? They were a long way from home! On their ways west, I guess.

The "Delawares" were the main group to live in south central Indiana. The Miamis were farther north and east (- the Miami River in Ohio is named for them.) The Shawnees were farther south. I'm really unsure of the origin of the name and what its connection to the current state of Delaware is.

Howso ever, immediately prior to the expansion of white settlers into the "West" there is a lot of evidence that the influence of Europeans in the New World stirred up a great deal of movement of native groups. Some of this may have been due to disease which came from the settlers but moved much. much more rapidly than they physically did themselves. Some of it seems to have been caused by trade goods that upset the balence of power.

I'd have to look into it to see where the Delawares came from originally.

Delawares in Indiana by bat400 on Tuesday, 18 July 2006

The Delawares moved into Indiana ahead of European settlers on the east coast, ~1700. They "sold" portions of their land and were forced off other parcels. On arrival in the "west" they requested entry from the Miamis and other locals. So when ethic-europeans moved into this area (1820's) they found Delawares.
Later some Delawares were eventually moved west again, reduced to pitifully small numbers by that time. Others had intermarried and settled down among what was rapidly becoming the ethic-european majority.
The Delawares kept track of their history using painted and marked sticks as a memory aid. Their history includes semi-mythic tales (like the "history" of ancient China, or most of Europe) and descriptions of arriving on the east coast from the interior. So it looks like they were wanderers from start to finish.
