stonetracker visited - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Visited late Oct 2023. Main mound easily accessible in a traffic circle about 200 yds past the cemetery entrance. I was unable to positively locate the other mound (Lochry Massacre Mound) although I did locate the monument commemorating that historical event.

Artificial Mound in Great Lakes Midwest

This site consists of two conical mounds, both in the River View Cemetery in Aurora, IN. The main mound is easily viewed in Section A of the cemetery in the middle of a traffic circle. It is about 4-5 feet high and perhaps 80-100 ft in diameter. It is mowed and maintained as part of the cemetery grounds.

The second mound, the Lochry Massacre Mound, is located east of the Lochry Massacre Monument below Section F of the cemetery, according to the guidebook "Indian Mounds of the Middle Ohio Valley" by Susan Woodward and Jerry McDonald. However I was unable to locate anything obvious in that area, not even a slight rise. It is possible that it is located just outside cemetery property.

According to the same source, neither mound appears to have been excavated, but one or both were possibly built by the Fort Ancient culture (1000-1700 CE), as there are other Fort Ancient sites in the vicinity.

The coordinate given is for the main mound.
