Hillfort in Butler County, Ohio."The Fortified Hill Earthwork is one of six Hopewell Culture earthworks on a six mile stretch of the Great Miami River included on a map in Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley published as the first publication of the Smithsonian Institution in 1848. Today it is the only one of the six that survives, and it still preserves its distinctive and impressive gateways. " - The Archaeological Conservancy
The other preserved hilltop enclosures in southwestern Ohio are Fort Ancient, Fort Hill, and Miami Fort. Fortified Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. According to Bob Genheimer, curator of archaeology at the Cincinnati Museum Center who sits on the board of trustees for Heartland Earthwork Conservancy, “This site is really unique. Most people have never seen it because it’s on private property, way off the road. Sections are remarkably intact.
Note: After weeks of work, group wins auction to preserve 2,000-year-old Butler County earthworks. See comment.
