Artificial Mound in Great Lakes Midwest

The site's original name was "Rowley Mound", given in honor of a Mr. Rowley, the property owner. However, the current name listed in the National Register of Historic Places is Raleigh Mound, and various authorities use both names interchangeably.

The single mound measures approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) tall. The diameter is undetermined because the mound was built on top of a small hill and erosion has caused soil outwash and some blending of the mound base with the surrounding topography. The mound was excavated at an uncertain time in the past, and the excavators recovered a distinctive artifact of a type of gorget, typically associated with the Adena culture. As there are other confirmed Adena earthworks nearby, it is likely that Raleigh Mound was also constructed during this period.

From what I can gather from (old) reports, this mound is on private property but the north side of it can be viewed from W. Mound St. Whether that is still true is TBD.

Thanks, annoyingly Google Street View doesn't cover those few local streets so we'll have to wait for a visit. It looks heavily tree covered from the satellite photo.
