Not Known (by us) in Collier County, Florida.
An obviously man-made canal, first recorded on maps by the European settlers of what is now Naples, Florida, connected an inland cove more directly to the Gulf of Mexico. In the last century the canal, after many decades of no use, was filled in. Excavations and carbon dating now indicate the canal dates back to at least 900 years ago. Additional samples may provide definitive proof of the structure's precolumbian origins in the Calusa culture.
The canal was slightly longer than a kilometer, stretching between a location on the coast between what is now the beachfront between 9th and 10th Avenue (the area shown on the map links for this site listing,) and the old city dock on Naples Bay.
If verified as a pre-contact structure, the canal would be similar to four other sites in Florida.
Note: Tests Suggest Age of Prehistoric Naples Canal. See comment.
