This is an outstanding area of beauty, with the 300 feet + tall phallic granite outcrop standing proud of towering cliffs in Chimney Rock State Park North Carolina.
Access is through a toll booth prior to driving along a meandering mountain road; an elevator can help the final main ascent to the rock, but steps remain for the final ascent - and while the views are fantastic, sometimes they are veiled - giving a completely different feel.
Some of Last of the Mohicans was filmed here too.
