Marietta Earthworks submitted by bat400 : A riverside park plaque showing the Marietta Earthwork Complex as is appeared when the modern town was first built in the late 18thC. Earthwork Complex in Washington County, Ohio.
The historic town Marietta was founded in 1788 at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers. The company of settlers from Boston were impressed by the complex of earthworks, which they likened to fortifications and sacred sites of the classical world. These earthworks were given 'classical' names and were initially preserved as commons. Many of them can be seen today among the modern streets.

Despite the resolution to preserve the earthworks, many were damaged by erosion after vegetation was removed and others were destroyed by development. In the 1830's many were restored according to plans made fifty years earlier, but there is some speculation that the work may have altered the shapes of some of the mounds to mimic impressive sites found further west.
The earthworks are attributed to the same cultures, identified as Hopewell and Adena, responsible for other geometric enclosures in found in the Ohio valley.

The location given is general, but lies at the Muskingum riverbank at the foot of the 'Sacra Via' graded way. Sources include: Indian Mounds of the Middle Ohio Valley, Woodward and McDonald, 2002.

Marietta Earthworks submitted by bat400 : Looking up what would have been the "Sacra Via," the path between two parallel, linear mounds. These structures lay between the rectangular earthen wall that surrounded the "Quandranaou," sloping downward toward the Ohio River. This "entry" from the river to the mound complex was preserved for about 100 years by the Marietta citizens. But as the 20th century arrived, many of the mound feature...
