Casas Velhas is a Bronze Age necropolis consisting of a group of cist type graves, located in Melides, Grândola, in the Setúbal district. This monument was discovered by technicians of the Sines area office in the early 70's. This site was the subject of excavations guided by archaeologists C. Tavares da Silva and Joaquina Soares, from the MAEDS - Archaeological and Etnographic Museum of the District of Setúbal (Museu Arqueológico e Etnográfico do Distrito de Setúbal). It was classified as IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Estate of Public Interest) at the 17st of July of 1990.
About the architecture of the necropolis
This necropolis, which total area hasn't yet been fully restored, is comprised of two nuclei of cists, with an approximate area of 30 m2 each. All the cist graves are of rectangular plan, formed mostly of four schist pillars covered with a monolithic cover.
The various tomb enclosures confined to each other, helping to give the sepulchral room the appearance of a honeycomb. This organization has been interpreted as a reflection of a society which, though already strongly hierarchical, still had a structure largely based on kinship relations.
About the burials
In general, these graves were used for individual burials. The dead were placed laterally in a contracted position (foetal) and not covered with earth and in most cases were accompanied by a ceramic vase.
