Archaeologists believe that the Celts who settled in the Glencolmcille area about 300 B.C. built the ruined promontory fort at Dun Alt and the stone fort above An Tra Bhan (the beach also known as the Silver Strand) in Malin Beg, south of Glencolmcille on the R263 in County Donegal.

Situated in easily defended locations, both are comparatively small and were probably only used when the community was in danger of attack. The remains of defensive walls and the ruins of a small house may be seen, and the foundations of a lookout post are found east of the fort.
