Ingapirca submitted by DrewParsons : Site in Ecuador. Perfectly fitting mortarless jointed walls at Ingapirca. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ingapirca is the largest Incan site in Ecuador. It is located in the remote south of the country about a kilometre from the village of the same name, which is reached by travelling approximately 60 kilometres north from Cuenca, the regional capital, on highway 35 and then approximately a further 12 km down a side road to the north east of the main highway.

The site has never been "lost" as was the case with Machu Picchu, and has been reported by Europeans at least as early as 1739 when detailed plans of the site were drawn. Ingapirca was probably a temple with facilities for relay runners who carried messages between Incan centres along the imperial way from Quito to Tomebamba. The site has the usual Incan mortarless, perfectly jointed masonry and is set in pleasant hill country. I visited the site in 1995 before digital cameras so the photos are less than perfect but give a good idea of the place.
