A large, multi-chambered stone Wari mausoleum dating from around 900 CE.
The large building sits on the flank of a hillside above Huaraz city. The rectangular footprint is approximately 20 x 10 meters. The building is of three levels, the lowest sunk into the ground by approximately half its depth and entered on a narrow side, the second level entered on a long side, and the highest level entered opposite the lowest level. A rounded roof tops the structure. The all stone construction is supported by interior walls making up the many chambers on each level and substantial internal passageways providing ventilation throughout.
The three levels are thought to have represented three primary realms common to Wari and other cultures of western South America: the underworld, where the dead nurtured their descendants, the world seen by humanity, and the world of the heavens, where deities dwell. These physical locations may have some bearing on where within the structure, specific persons mummified remains were placed.
the exact situation of Wari mummies in Willkawain is speculative since the contents were robbed in the colonial period and very few Wari mummy bundles have been found and examined in situ.
Outside the main chamber is a small satellite stone building that is thought to have been a place for a watchman or caretaker. There is also a small museum.
