Natural Bluff in Talbot County, Maryland.
Beachcombing on this and other islands in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay has frequently turned up arrowheads and other stone worked tools. A chance viewing of a television documentary on the New Mexico Clovis site by some locals led to the identification of Clovis type points found at Paw Paw Cove. Controversy and competing theories about the origins of eastern US finds of the Clovis era and earlier (as old as 18000 years) continue.

The site itself has not been excavated, but surveys have yielded stone work of a type associated with Paleo-Indian cultures dating back to the last ice age. At that time Tilghman was not an island. Instead, this shore line would have been a high bluff looking over the Susquehanna River - no bay had yet formed.

The site is on property now owned by the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.

Protecting Maryland Island Beachfront Preserves Ancient Artifacts by bat400 on Monday, 08 January 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
Like Cactus Hill, Virginia, and Midowcroft Rock Shelter, Paw Paw Cove is an eastern United States Site that has yielded some of the oldest human artifacts in the Western Hemisphere. The attached article describes some of the finds, speculation on their origins, and how an effort to preserve the beachfront Horseshoe Crab hatchery will also help preserve artifacts left by ancient man.
