Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape
Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape submitted by aluta : Here is the serpentine wall at Hackettstown, New Jersey. Sorry for the quality of the picture. This was taken some years ago with my old camera. Note the curving form of the wall. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Mysterious rock piles in New Jersey.
An outstanding feature of this site is a fine wavy or serpentine wall with a very good example of a tipped-up triangular stone at the end of it, making it look very much like a snake. This kind of feature is frequently seen at sites that are in low areas near marshes or springs. The site also has unusually-shaped natural boulders, which seem to be part of the complex.

This site is in woods outside Hackettstown New Jersey. There is a lovely waterfall in another part of the same woods. The greater part of the stone features are in a lower area, rather wet, with a small brook and springs.

The rock piles here, unlike those in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, for example, are wider than they are high, perhaps ten feet in diameter, but only four feet high. That's an estimate. I didn't measure. From the looks of it, the stone features there now are only part of what once was here. Some rock piles are collapsed and in places there seem to be remnants of lost features. The site also has a circle of low stones surrounding a flat rock. It is not known whether that is part of the original complex. It could be a later addition.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Latitude and longitude are for nearest town, not for the site itself.

Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape
Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape submitted by aluta : This feature, in an adjacent part of the wood to the main site at Hackettstown, has no name, but those who have been to sites over the years have seen things like it. It may be a way to mark boulders that are special for some reason, or a pointer to set people on their way to the main site. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape submitted by aluta : One of the notable boulders at the Hackettstown site. Natural boulders of unusual shapes are a common element in the ceremonial stone landscapes of the eastern U.S. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape
Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape submitted by aluta : This is the tipped-up stone at the end of the serpentine wall at the Hackettstown site. When I took this many years ago, I took it reluctantly, at the urging of others, as I was sceptical of the snake/wall concept. I have now seen it enough times to know that this was a very good example of this common feature. I wish I'd taken the head and wall together! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape
Hackettstown Ceremonial Stone Landscape submitted by aluta : A nice rock pile at the Hackettstown, New Jersey site. Note the large stones that make it up, and its low, round shape. These pictures were taken some years ago, and I no longer recall how many rock piles there were all told. Not more than 20, probably less. Some were in disrepair.
