Moray Terraces
Moray Terraces submitted by pab : Moray craters, Peru. This series of craters was a delight. On the plateau above the Urubamba river valley, there is a series of 4 terraced craters which have been shown to have pre-Inca beginnings. They are up to half a mile across, and over a hundred feet deep in places. What is really fascinating is the fact that, because of their depth and orientation, there can be a temperature diff... Misc. Earthwork in Cuzco State, Peru. Inca experimental agricultural laboratory. Terracing going down to a depth of 30 metres with a temperature gradient of 15 degrees celsius.

There are three separate "bowl" shaped groups of concentric terraces. One has been restored and is being used by local farmers. Each has stone retaining walls with carved channels for carrying water and steps for climbing into and out of the structure. There was possibly a ceremonial use for the site as well. But none is recorded by the Spanish writers of the conquest and there is no ceremonial folk tradition associated with the Terraces.

Several guide books mention pollen studies showing over 200 useful varieties of grains, fruits, and vegetable pollen have been found at the terraces.

Note: An Inca adaptation of agricultural terraces into a practical (and artistic) structure that would have allowed experimental botanic trials.

Moray Terraces
Moray Terraces submitted by bat400 : Agricultural Research Site in Peru. Moray was built within a natural sinkhole and based on evidence of an irrigation system and pollen remains, its identified as a site the Incas used for test plots of various plants to determine their method and environment for production. Photo by bat400, September 2018. (Stitched from three photos.) (Vote or comment on this photo)

Moray Terraces
Moray Terraces submitted by pab : Moray Terraces, Peru The largest of the series of 4 terraces - this one also has the greatest depth. Several parts of the terraces were being repaired - animal grazing is obviously causing damage to the Inca-built stone terrace walls. Photo, Sept 2013 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Moray Terraces
Moray Terraces submitted by pab : Moray Terraces, Peru. As in many of the other Inca sites we visited, Moray had this simple but effective method of getting from one level to another. It not only makes a great pattern, they were also very easy to use at a run, and meant that no growing space was wasted. Photo, Sept 2013 (Vote or comment on this photo)
