Rock Art in Sánchez Ramírez Province, Dominican Republic.
A cave with sixty-one petroglyphs and two rare bas-relief sculptures. Raul Fernandez, who lives nearby, discovered the art. According to Spanish archaeologist Adolfo Lopez, the rock art may be 5,000 years old.

Lopez described one bas-relief as, "a figure sitting in a fetal position, which gives the idea that it is dedicated to fertility".

Note on location given: Monte Claro appears to be a vicinity, perhaps a township, in Sánchez Ramírez Province. The capital is Cotuí, which is the assigned location of the site listing. When better information is available the site listing will be updated.

Note: Prehistoric cave paintings found in Dominican Republic. See comment.

Original local article: Cave Art found in Dominican Republic by bat400 on Sunday, 22 August 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
The original article by Mairobi Herrera appears in the Spanish language site listindiario.com/la-republica. See the small photo links showing what appears to be the 2 bas-relief carvings and another more traditional pecked petroglyph, which appears to have been made on a curved surface, producing a similar effect.

In the article Lopez regrets the irony that the Caribbean has large numbers of rock art locations, but very few local archaeologists who specialize in rock art. The article implies that the art has always been exposed to some light levels and substantial air exchange, and would not necessarily be threatened by controlled tourism.

Prehistoric cave paintings found in Dominican Republic by bat400 on Sunday, 22 August 2010

Sixty-one petroglyphs and two bas-relief sculptures that may be up to 5,000 years old have been found in the Dominican Republic.
Raul Fernandez, a local resident, found the work in a cave in northern Monteclaro town.

The cavern has 61 petroglyphs and two bas-relief sculptures, according to Spanish archaeologist Adolfo Lopez, who is in charge of researching the area and believes that the petroglyphs and sculptures could be 5,000 years old

Lopez, a specialist in cave art at Madrid’s Universidad Complutense, said one of the Monteclaro sculptures is among the three most important pre-Columbian cave art ever found, due to its particular shape and because such works are so rarely found.

‘This sculpture is the last bas-relief of quality to be found in the Antilles. It portrays a figure sitting in a fetal position, which gives the idea that it is dedicated to fertility,’ he said.

Lopez christened the cave with the name of ‘Raul de Monteclaro’ in honour of its discoverer and the place where it is located.
