St Patrick's holy well/sacred spring is to be found 2 miles to the south-west of Clonmel and half a mile east of Marlfield - just off the N27 Clonmel to Cahir road. It is located at an early Christian site in a somewhat secluded glen beside a ruined 17th century church. In the middle of the sacred healing pool stands an early Christian cross.

Water gushes up through limestone and keeps the large pool topped-up, and at the edge clear water issues through more limestone rocks where it can be drank and taken away in bottles. [Yes, it is apparently drinkable]. A flight of steps descends down into the pool for pilgrims wishing to immerse themselves and receive a miraculous cure. Though it now tends to be used as a wishing well, pilgrims used to come here in vast numbers and some still do come on St Patrick's feastday 17th March.

The ruined chapel is 17th century but traces of a much earlier monastic building were found underneath it, possibly one that was founded by St Patrick or one of his followers in the 5th century CE. In the centre of the pool stands a small stubby Celtic cross on a stone base - again this probably dates back to the Dark Ages and possibly to the patron saint of Ireland himself.

At the end of the article there is:

"Read More at . . . ."

What does that mean? A broken link?

Hi Martin, I have noticed that this has happened a couple times before with my site pages. Is it something I'm doing wrong, perhaps clicking on something that doesn't need clicking. Never mind, at least everything eles is there. I am no expert. Does anybody out there know what's wrong ?

Sorry Andy, it's in Co Tipperary, not Waterford, by a few miles. Could you change that for me. Thanks.
