SandyG visited on 12th Aug 2017 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 5 Access: 1 This is not an easy stone row to get to. Whichever way you approach it from involves walking through boggy terrain and dodging around lochans. Access from the south is relatively straightforward with the advantage that the row is visible from the start. Car parking is available at NF 83520 65827 and while you are here a visit to the nearby Barpa Langass chambered cairn is a must. From the car park carefully cross the road and walk along the verge to NF 82832 65399. From here head north avoiding the lochans. A couple of streams will need to be jumped. I would recommend wellingtons for this one. I can not overstate just how wet the ground conditions are. Assume that progress will be slow and do not set out late in the day. A decent map is essential.
In the parish of North Uist and the former county of Inverness-shire (now the Western Isles), the Canmore record gives details of the main stone - a standing stone (2.1 metres high, 3.1 metres wide and up to 45 cms thick), some 210 metres west of a small summit cairn built on the Airigh na Gaoithe chambered long cairn (NF86NW 21). It is oriented at 260 degrees with respect to true north.
In 1986, the alignment was recorded as running west from the long cairn for approximately 275 metres and "made up of a leaning stone (7 metres from the north side of the long cairn), a possible fallen stone, a leaning boulder, the above mentioned standing stone and a boulder."
The alignment sits amongst heather and rough grass at an altitude of 41 metres. The site will have clear views over the sea.
This stone row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain - see their entry for Airigh Na Gaoithe, which includes photographs, a description, a plan of the row from a recent survey in August 2017, plus access information. The SRoBB notes that this is not an easy row to get to. "Whichever way you approach it from involves walking through boggy terrain and dodging around lochans … A couple of streams need to be jumped. I woul recommend wellingtons for this one … A decent map is essential".
