Anta da Coutada de Barbacena is a superb dolmen near to the village of Barbacena, in the municipality of Elvas, in the Portalegre district, at eastern Portugal.

This anta was built in the neo-chalcolithic period and it's classified as a National Monument since the 16th of May, 1939. This monument is part of a megalithic route known as the Barbacena circuit from the group of Antas of Elvas. This route was organized by the ex-IPPAR organization that is now part of the DGPC organization. The objective was to promote and value the monuments that are part of the heritage of the area of the municipality of Elvas. It's still possible to book a guided visit to these megalithic routes at any Tourist office of the region of Elvas. If you prefer you can do it by yourself.

About the architecture
This monument keeps the cover of the chamber in its original position, although some pillars are missing. There are no remains of the North side pillars. The four pillars still standing are part of the polygonal chamber, two of which serve to support the capstone at the top. At the corridor can be observed three pillars on the North side and one on the South. It still keeps one slab of coverage "in situ" and another one displaced, fallen to the side. The mound or tumulus is partly conserved.

IMPORTANT: Please don't follow the signs at the Barbacena village to the anta and to the Roman bridge or you will end up blocked in the middle of a dirt road in very bad conditions. There's a better way to do it, go by an access dirt road that starts on N243 road, it's located at the following coordinates: 38.977321° -7.322929°. Once you park your car you have to go by foot and you will cross a small water course. It would be advisable to wear waterproof footwear.

You can download the route on Wikiloc. Check it out here.

Aditional information:
- You are entering in private property but the access is possible.
- The entrance to the zone of the monuments may be blocked by fences, they were essentially made to demarcate the land and not allow the escape of livestock.
- Usually there are spaces in the fences within these demarcated areas where the access is possible. When entering in demarcated land never forget to close the access gate of the location, you need to be very aware because cattle can escape.
- There are no signs prohibiting us from entering so the access can be open but be careful when you explore every time you see this red plaques that alert you for the Hunting Zones. Remind yourself that usually hunters can only hunt at selected hunting days (Thursdays, Sundays and on public holidays).

Anta da Coutada de Barbacena submitted by Alta-Falisa : Balancing act. Our ancestors were not only pretty adroit at erecting such monuments, but also quite attentive to their aesthetic -- even if they were meant to be buried under a 'mamoa' (tumulus). March 2017.

Better leave your car here. The Anta is on the hilltop, at the foot of the tallest tree. March 2017. Alternatively, follow the recommendations by Bak_teria (photo here-under)

I visited this impressive "anta" in 2004. It is actually within Portugal, but very close to the Spanish border. There is a guide in the city of Elvas that takes people on dolmen tours (Antas da Elvas) in his jeep, and this dolmen is part of the tour. It would be very challenging to find without the guide. Some of the dolmens on the tour (this may be one of them) are on private property, and there are gates with locks involved. The guide has the keys or access to the keys. But it is well worth visiting, as are the other megaliths in the area around Elvas. A bit more information on the site can be found at: http://www2.stetson.edu/religion/lucas/content/simple_dolmen/barbiere6.shtml

I tried to visit it today (22 Abril 2012), but the tour is over about four years now. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be possible to do it "alone"...

Of course you can. Although it's inside private property the access is open, you just need to always close the access gates behind you because cattle can escape.
