Artificial Mound in Co. Meath
The Hill of Slane mound is often ignored, as most people stop short at the church and monastic ruins by the car park. In legend it is where St Patrick lit the Beltane fire instituting the Catholic faith in Ireland as a challenge to the pagan religion. The chief druid was the first to light the sacred fire at Tara,, and defying this was. punishable by death. The sites are intervisible.
About 300 meters due West past the monastic ruins, which are marked as the "Hill of Slane" on maps, across a grassy field is a copse of trees, that outline the fairly deep ditch surrounding the steep mound. It is supposedly the burial place of Slaine Mac Dela, first high king of Ireland. Today it is fenced off and left to nature. Its location was obviously important, as the surrounding ditch had to be cut through solid rock in places. A lovely peaceful site.
