Slieve Gullion
Slieve Gullion submitted by ainsloch : Sunset at Slieve Gullion, 3 days after the astronomical solstice (Vote or comment on this photo)
Apparently the highest passage tomb in all Ireland and well worth the climb. It will take you a good half hour to climb from the small car park halfway around the park's one way loop road. The tomb is situated right on the summit, 570m above sea level with fantastic 360 degree views.

The entrance to the tomb is slightly obscured from the footpath and we nearly missed it, believing that we had come across a passageless cairn like Maeve's Tomb.

Nearby is a small lake, home of a legendary hag. The place oozes with atmosphere.

Slieve Gullion
Slieve Gullion submitted by Dmull : This grave is called Calliagh Berras' House located on the top of slieve gullion mountain named after a legendary witch who could change into a hare. In one story, the Cailleach told Fionn she had dropped a ring in a lake and pleaded with him to dive in and fetch it from the bottom for her. In doing so, he was bewitched and when he came out of the water with the ring, his blond locks had turned to... (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

A Walk for the Weekend: Ulster at your feet by Andy B on Wednesday, 24 February 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
Armagh’s highest mountain has bewitching views, writes John G Dwyer

My mission here is to reach the summit of Armagh’s highest mountain, so this morning I set off uphill from the Slieve Gullion Courtyard centre by following signs for a forest drive through stands of delightfully mixed woodlands.

An exploration of the Neolithic burial chamber that adorns the top and represents the highest of its kind on these islands took a few minutes. Then it was north along a whaleback mountaintop with wonderful 360 degree views that, today, encompassed the deeply snow-laden Mourne mountains.

Slieve Gullion: Volunteers help repair ancient cairn by Andy B on Sunday, 26 July 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
A group of volunteers has helped to repair a 5,000-year-old burial cairn on one of Northern Ireland's most significant mountains. Around 30 of them trekked to the top of Slieve Gullion in south Armagh to carry out the work, under the supervision of an archaeologist.

They helped to fix damage done to the huge passage grave by the weather and increasing numbers of hill walkers. Stones had become dislodged from the top of the ancient cairn.

As a result, the entrance to the site was in danger of being blocked.

The burial chamber is lined up to illuminate with the light from the setting sun of the winter solstice on 21 December every year.
