L'Anse aux Meadows is (so far) the only known Viking site in North America and the earliest evidence of Europeans in the western hemisphere. It is recognized as both a National Historic site and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is operated by Parks Canada in partnership with the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. The site was in use by the Vikings about 1000 years ago.

The site has an informative interpretation centre through which you access the site, with the ruins and reconstruction being a few minutes walk from the centre. It is worth noting that this site is on the northern limit of the western peninsular of Newfoundland, several hours driving from the closest major towns.

Further details can be found on the websites linked above.

Note: Solar storm confirms Vikings settled in North America exactly 1,000 years ago. Analysis of wood from timber-framed buildings in Newfoundland shows Norse-built settlement 471 years before Columbus. More in the comments on our page

Solar storm confirms Vikings settled in North America exactly 1,000 years ago by Andy B on Thursday, 21 October 2021
(User Info | Send a Message)
Analysis of wood from timber-framed buildings in Newfoundland shows Norse-built settlement 471 years before Columbus

Long before Columbus crossed the Atlantic, eight timber-framed buildings covered in sod stood on a terrace above a peat bog and stream at the northern tip of Canada’s island of Newfoundland, evidence that the Vikings had reached the New World first.

But precisely when the Vikings journeyed to establish the L’Anse aux Meadows settlement had remained unclear – until now.

A new type of dating technique using a long-ago solar storm as a reference point has revealed that the settlement was occupied in AD1021, exactly a millennium ago and 471 years before the first voyage of Columbus. The technique was used on three pieces of wood cut for the settlement, all pointing to the same year.

Dan Snow''s programme ended with a slightly weird celebration. How did they conclude that the iron-working slag that they found was of Viking origin? The only date that was revealed by the radiocarbon test was 17th-18th century AD. So, British or French iron? Why Viking?

The Vikings Uncovered - BBC One TV, Monday 4th April by Andy B on Sunday, 03 April 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
A new discovery has revealed that the Vikings may have travelled hundreds of miles further into North America than previously thought. It's well known that they reached the tip of the continent more than 1,000 years ago, but the full extent of their exploration has remained a mystery, writes historian Dan Snow.

After a long hike across boggy ground and through thick pine forests, clutching pepper spray to protect against bear attacks, Sarah Parcak and her small team of archaeologists stood on an exposed, wind-blasted headland in North America.

Exhausted but happy, they had been led to Point Rosee in Newfoundland by the most high-tech weaponry in the modern archaeological arsenal - satellite data captured 383 miles (600km) above the Earth. But once here they were back to using trowels and brushes. I joined them to see how this powerful combination of new and old allowed them to make what could be a seismic discovery.

We were here on the trail of one of the greatest maritime cultures of all time. We were here inspired by ancient chronicles which many have written off as fairy stories. We were here looking for Vikings.

In The Vikings Uncovered Dan Snow tracks their expansion west, first as raiders and then as settlers and traders. He travels through Britain, to Iceland, Greenland and Canada to see what could be the most westerly Viking settlement ever discovered.

The programme will be on BBC One on Monday 4 April at 20:30.

Just finished a very interesting book that included much about this site and possible others across the area and in Greenland, Iceland and Scotland!! It is by Farley Mowat (what a guy!) and called 'The Alban Quest', very speculative but also well thought out and based on archaeological evidence. A reasonable idea I reckon - and I enjoyed the book immensely...
