Ancient Settlement in Sermermiut, Ilulissat, Disko Bay, Greenland. There are approximately 120 archaeological sites in the Ilulissat area dating back to the Saqqag, Early Dorset and Thule cultures. These cultures thrived from approximately 2400 BC to 900 AD, 800 BC to 0AD, and from around 1200 AD respectively.

The Sermermiut site was first excavated at the begining of the 20th century although the stratigraphy and hence chronological sequences were not well documented then and so could not be identified by later researchers. However, in 1953 subsequent excavations identified the sequence of the three cultures: Saqqaq, Early Dorset and Thule, and C14 dating in 1983 placed the Early Dorset phase of settlement to between 600 BC and 200 BC. Finds include the remains of dwelling structures, middens and artifacts.

Ongoing survey work is extending knowledge of these early cultures. The Sermermiut valley is located in the World Heritage Site on the northern shore of the Ilulissat Icefjord some 2 kilometres south of the centre of the Disko Bay town of Ilulissat. From the centre of town walk south to the old Heliport and from there follow the board walk a further 1.2 kilometres south to the shore of the Icefjord to find the archaeological site. You must keep to the trail in this area. Finds from this site are held in the Ilulissat Museum.
