A very overgrown ruin of an Iron Age hillfort in Cornwall. It seems to have been wiped out by the expanding of Penzance. Click on the Old Maps link to get a good view.

Note: A full archaeological survey of this Iron Age Hillfort is due to begin at the end of October - see comment below for details.

Lescudjack Castle
Lescudjack Castle submitted by JimChampion : From Trengwainton Carn there are splendid views across Mounts Bay. I took this photo, ostensibly of St Michael's Mount, using my camera's maximum zoom from the sunny but windy summit of Trengwainton Carn. Upon closer inspection later on, I found that I had inadvertently photographed Lescudjack Castle in Penzance - it lies roughly half way between The Mount and Trengwainton Carn. In this photo the ... Lescudjack Hill Fort and the Winter Solstice by Andy B on Sunday, 25 July 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
Lescudjack Iron Age hill fort was officially handed back to the people of Penzance on the Winter Solstice 2007 to mark the revival of the Cornish mid-winter festival of Montol.

The festival of Montol (Cornish for Winter Solstice) runs from the 15th to the 22nd December, and culminated with the lighting of the Mock (Cornish Yule log) atop the ancient beacon of Lescudjack Hill Fort.

This is good news. When I lived close by (3 years ago) the place was a tip. A full restoration will not be possible. It was clearly evident that a large part of the original fort was built on in modern times with houses on 3 sides and a road on the other. Still, any change is likely to be vast improvement.

A full archaeological survey of one of the oldest sites in Penzance - the Iron Age Lescudjack Hill Fort - is due to begin at the end of October. The survey will be carried out by Cornwall County Council's Historic Environment Service (Projects) and will be followed by a geophysical survey to help identify buried archaeological features.

Heritage Lottery Funding was awarded to Penwith Council in March for the restoration of the pre-historic hill fort which kick-started the acquisition proceedings for the site.

A spokesman for Penwith Council said this week that in preparation for the work, which begins on October 31, it is necessary for the site to be cleared and for access to be restricted for public safety reasons.

The spokesman told The Cornishman: "The council would like to reassure the public that all trees will be left and that once the archaeological survey has been completed by the early summer, the site will be replanted, with the aim of enhancing the understanding and appreciation of the hill fort and its environmental value to the community."

The survey aims to investigate, describe and understand the heritage character and significance of the hill fort, to assess its potential as a community resource through engaging with local people - especially schools - and to guide the future management of the site.

The county council's Historic Environment Service will be carrying out desk research, looking at historic maps and engravings as well as aerial photographs, followed by a measured electronic survey to make a record of the site in its current state.

The follow-up geophysical survey will also decide where test pits may be dug.

"The project is very keen to see local schools engage with the archaeological survey work, and an open day is planned in the spring to facilitate this" the spokesman added.

The project has commissioned Lesley Allen, the education officer at Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, to create a package of educational workshops and other resources.

Earlier this year and in addition to the Heritage Lottery Funding, Penwith Council also received grants from Penzance Town Council and Cornwall Heritage Trust as well as donations from the community.

The forthcoming archaeological survey and geophysical survey and excavations will lead to a fuller understanding of the nature, date and extent of the defences on the hill-top,

Any interesting materials excavated will be displayed at Penlee House Gallery and Museum.
