Maatje visited on 23rd Feb 2024 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 3 The Dolmen El Charcón was signposted well at the CA-0419 near (above) El Gastor.
The strenuous walk is uphill is 1.2 km with very nice views.
A beautifull site with large capstones, very special indeed.
It is situated next to the rim of the gorge of the river Arroyo de la Angostura.
After the climb uphill there is a sort of a valley with many heaps of stones and that area looks like other Castro's we have seen up north. In that area is Dolmen El Charcón II.

The orthostats supporting the original 5 capstones are still in place although the capstone immediately prior to that covering the chamber is now missing. Prior to the corridor a line of small irregularly shaped orthostats form a shallow 'V'. The stone of the capstones and orthostats is local limestone.
The corridor faces 88 degrees 43 minutes True. I was amazed to find the corridor faced exactly 90 degrees Magnetic until I realised that was purely coincidental.
The dolmen would have been covered with an earth mound that would have been perhaps 30 metres in diameter.
Although this is the largest dolmen so far discovered in Cadiz province there is a surprising lack of information relating too it.
The contents of the chamber have been looted since its discovery to the extent that it is not known how many people were interned there. What was discovered during excavations consisted of some twenty flint arrowheads and some ceramic bowls pots and dishes.
Nor have any samples been taken for dating purposes so the best guess for its construction, based on its architecture and comparison with similar, dated sites, is 4000 BCE.
Studies of the area surrounding the dolmen of Los Gigantes indicate that there were no permanent settlements in the area at the supposed time it was built.
