Ty Newydd (Llanfaelog)
Ty Newydd (Llanfaelog) submitted by SandyG : View from north west in 1980. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A view from the north west taken in 1980. From the road, this dolmen looked like a thin slab on top of two brick columns; in fact it is an enormous lintel stone, with some original supporting stones - but blatantly held up by these red brick uprights! Despite the obvious anachronistic character, the site is still imposing and endearing.

Additional information submitted by Drew Parsons in September 2010:
Small concrete bollards around the perimeter of the site are suspected to denote the footprint of the original mound. Excavated in 1936 Early Bronze Age items were found although they represent a subsequent use of this neolithic site.

E Rhosneigr. Heading north from Barclodiad, turn left off A4080; it's a short distance up on the right on the Llanfaelog to Bryngwran road. Parking is on a narrow grass verge, followed by a short walk.

There are at least four or five cup marks on the capstone, maybe more. I have tried to take a picture of them to no avail, but they are quite distinct.

There is a photo in 'The Ancient Stones of Wales' by Barber and Williams, which purports to show Ty Newydd in 1900, with the capstone resting nicely on 3 uprights, without all the modern hideous brickwork. Presumably, the local sheep have been undertaking a bricklaying course, or was it the Ministry for Badly Restored Monuments? Does anyone know why it was done?
